The riot tapes [videorecording] : a personal history, 1968-1970 / by Ilene Segalove. [1984]

The riot tapes is a three-part video art piece that uses narrative, reenactments and archival footage to recount the artist's experiences during her first two years of college at the University of California in Santa Barbara, from 1968-1970. We see the artist go in and out of relationships and friendships, develop as an artist, and broaden her social consciousness during the tumultuous Vietnam War period. Although she literally slept through the violent war protests in Santa Barbara during the winter of 1970, she would later use art as a way of peacefully expressing her objections to the war. Ronald Reagan was the governor of California during the time period recounted in The riot tapes, and the artist was inspired to relive those years as a reaction to the policies of the Reagan administration in the early 1980s.
